To round off the discussion on oral hygiene measures, one final thing to mention is interdental brushes. These have become more popular nowadays as people become more aware of how important it is to reduce the amount of bacteria in their mouth in order to protect their gums.
Although flossing is a good first step for cleaning between your teeth, if you stain your teeth to see the bacteria on them and then try using the floss you will see how tricky it can be to remove all the bacteria from between your teeth because it is very sticky.
Once you understand this it is then appropriate to look for a more effective tool.
Interdental brushes fit the bill nicely because all of the little filaments on the brush increase the surface area of the cleaning instrument, so there is more of the instrument available to contact the tooth and remove the sticky bacteria.
Interdental brushes can be a bit tricky to use, but when they are needed we instruct our patients on how to use them and help them find the right brushes for them. If you would be interested in finding out which interdental brushes are most suitable for you, then come and see us for a hygienist visit and we will show you how.
