Root Treatments

Root treatments are necessary when decay has reached the nerve of the tooth or if the tooth has been traumatised in some way, causing the nerve supply in the tooth to die.

In these situations bacteria in the tooth cause infection and pain and in order to resolve this the nerve space in the tooth needs to be thoroughly cleaned and then filled with a type of rubber material that will prevent bacteria from entering the tooth again.

The root treatment of a tooth is a sophisticated procedure that can require prolonged work, particularly on back teeth where the teeth have more than one root.

It is important that the tooth is kept as dry as possible during treatment to prevent more bacteria from the saliva entering the tooth. For this reason a rubber dam is used during treatment to isolate the tooth from the rest of the mouth which improves the quality of the treatment provided and the safety of the procedure.

As gaining access to the nerve of the tooth often significantly weakens the main part of the tooth and leaves it vulnerable to fracture; a crown is often recommended following a root treatment in order to protect the tooth and prevent it from fracturing in the future when in use.

Costs for root treatments range from £300 - £450 depending on the number of roots in the teeth and the complexity of the treatment involved.

Crowns range from £380 - £600 per tooth depending on the materials used and the desired aesthetic outcome.
